Traffic studies: the what, the why, and the how
Presented by: Mr John-Paul Foster

Presentation overview
Traffic studies play an important role in planning developments, designing roads, and managing entire city street networks. But generally they are a hidden part of the civil engineering process. This presentation will give you an insight in to the varied types of study that can be done, from short and quick studies to wide ranging ongoing studies. There is no single solution. There are different reasons why and when they may be done – a forward thinking authority or developer may use it as part of the planning stage, right through to being used to see what road improvement would work to relieve congestion. And when you decide to do a study, what key things will you need to consider? We will use the Darwin City Centre Traffic Study as a real life example to illustrate some of the obvious and not-so-obvious lessons learnt.

The presenter
John-Paul (J-P) is the lead engineer for roads for Jacobs on the BP Khazzan project here in Oman. Before being dedicated to the project, he spent over 2 years in the Jacobs Saudi Arabia office as Technical Director for Transportation Infrastructure. This was preceded by 5 years in Australia for Jacobs, where he established the offices road safety and transport planning / analysis capability, including leading the traffic impact assessment for the construction of the onshore LNG plant as part of the $34 billion Ichthys Project. Before Australia, he graduated from University of Birmingham and spent 9 years in the UK for Peter Brett Associates. He is a Chartered Engineer with the ICE and Engineers Australia.
